Founded
in 1958, St George's is owned by a non-profitmaking Association and run as a
limited company. The Principal is a member of HMC. The school's main 14
acre site is on the north-west side of Rome, but 18 school buses serve all
principal residential areas of Rome. A second site, in a gracious villa in the
Nomentana district, opened in September 2002, offering an alternative city
centre Junior School for children up to the age of eleven. St George's
provides a British-system education, with a rigorous academic programme, and
many extra curricular activities. Sensitive pastoral care and encouragement of
self-discipline are regarded as very important. The 15 years of schooling
incorporate the work of UK kindergarten, primary and secondary schools, leading
to (I)GCSE and the IB. Average class size is 20. There is a strong EAL
programme in small sets in all except the final years and also provision for
students with special educational needs. |
Facilities include standard and specialised classrooms, a beautiful
library with very up-to-date electronic facilities, three art studios, six
laboratories and three computer rooms. Sports facilities include a running
track, grass fields for football, rugby and cricket, astroturf tennis courts,
and all-weather hockey, volleyball and basketball courts.
Teachers are
almost all from UK, holding university degrees and on average have 8 years of
teaching experience. All teachers participate in pastoral care and guidance
through a House system.
Specialised UK and US careers advice is
available. Most pupils go on to universities or other higher education, the
majority to UK universities, but also to the USA, Italy and elsewhere.
The school year runs from early September to late June, Monday to Friday,
8.45am to 3.35pm, with many activities in breaks and after school. Music
(choral and orchestra) is particularly strong, with drama, expeditions, many
sports and hobbies all encouraged.
Field trips, musical tours, the model
United Nations and various other activities take place throughout the year.
