Mutiara International Grammar School, based in Kuala Lumpur was founded in 1997, and aims to provide pupils with an enriching and challenging educational programme based on the British National Curriculum. Mutual respect and tolerance are strong themes of the high-quality educational provision for English-speaking children aged 3 to 16. The school's buildings provide a very pleasant working environment for both staff and pupils, and includes attractive classrooms, library, music room and extensive outside playground and sports field as well as a two fully networked computer suites with Internet connections.

Having the Junior and Senior School on the same site holds many advantages, especially in ensuring that the transition from one school to another is as smooth as possible. There are four Houses, which a pupil may belong to, geared to fostering healthy competition amongst its members. Examinations are held twice a year; with a full report at the end of each term, and an Interim report at half term. There are two formal Parents’ Evenings for each Year group throughout the year. Pupils take SATS at all Key Stages to ensure pupils achieve an appropriate level in the core subjects. There is a wide choice of subjects that pupils may take when they enter the Senior School. Commerce, Business Studies, and Accounting have recently been introduced, and all pupils must study a foreign language other than English. Many pupils take Bahasa Melayu but there is also a choice of Mandarin or French.

There is an emphasis on educating the whole child, not just giving them an academic grounding. Ability to be involved in sport, music, and charity work is a key element of the extra-curricular programme. The School Concert is a highlight of the school year. Every summer the whole school goes on a residential excursion away from the School to help foster leadership skills, and allow pupils to learn beyond the confines of the classroom.

The school has about 450 pupils representing over 30 different nationalities. It is therefore a small school, and this is its strength. Everyone knows each other and cares for each other. The academic year has approximately 180 school days divided into three terms between early September and early July. Staff have weekly meetings with INSET, to ensure professional development is available for all staff.

The school day starts at 07.45 with a whole school assembly, and extends until 14.25 although many of the younger pupils finish at 12.00 midday. Thursday is an extended day to allow for a full extra-curricular programme involving sporting activities, school clubs, and charity visits.

The school is very well located, approximately 5 km east of the city centre enabling appropriate visits to support the curriculum, or for educational trips and sporting fixtures.

Admission is possible at any time of the academic year and requires reports from previous schools, an assessment in English, Mathematics and Science, and an interview with the respective Head of School. Each application is carefully considered so that we ensure that entrants can benefit from the educational programme we offer.

Due to growing demand it is expected that all pupils who wish to join the school, should have a strong confidence in English, and a willingness to be involved in all aspects of school life. It is our belief that if a pupil is happy and confident, that everything else falls into place. For that reason we see the support of the parents as a fundamental part of this process., The annual parents/staff/pupils football match is an event much looked forward to!! Ultimately, the school encourages pupils to become considerate and hardworking young adults, with a sense of purpose in their studies, and a sense of competence in all that they do.
