INDEPENDENT BONN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, formerly the British Embassy Preparatory School, Bonn.

Founded in 1963 by the British Embassy in Bonn, the school serves the needs of families in the Bonn/Cologne area who are looking for a coeducational English-speaking day school for their children. As of September 1985, the school is registered in Germany as an Eingetragener Verein, and is governed by a Board composed of up to eight parents and two staff. The school is a member of various recognized educational bodies. In September 2001 the school received German accreditation in the form of Ersatzschule status.'

The curriculum includes a full range of subjects, including both German and French, arts/crafts, and physical education.

The staff, all fully qualified and experienced, is recruited from the United Kingdom and other countries. Length of service varies, but averages some 10 years.

The enrolment of some 200 pupils is drawn from about 30 nations. Most pupils stay for two to three years, sometimes transferring to other schools in Bonn at the age of 10 or 11.

The school year runs in three terms from the end of August to July, but pupils are admitted at any time. The school day is from 8.50 am to 3.15 pm, with a midday break. Many extra activities, particularly in sport or the creative arts, are also available after school hours on a voluntary basis and during lunchtimes.

The school moved in September 1978 to a modern building comprising 10 classrooms plus special facilities for science, craft and music. There is a hall, a library and full sports provision both indoor and outdoor. A building was opened in September 1987 comprising a music room, language department, science lab and extended Special Needs Department. A further extension was added in September 1989, giving office space, classroom and library areas. Additional premises were acquired in May 1992 to house a Kindergarten. A new computer suite was opened in 2000.

To cater for the changing status of Bonn, the school has from 1 September 1997 changed its name to the Independent Bonn International School. Admission is by application to the Headmistress.
