The English College Foundation established The English College in Prague in 1994 to provide a broad and balanced education in English, with an international dimension, for students between the ages of 13 to 19. The College is both a British independent school and part of the Czech educational network. Students are prepared for the International General Certificate of Education (at 16) and the International Baccalaureate (at 18+). A successful performance in these examinations qualifies a student for admission to universities in the Czech Republic and throughout the world. In 2005 twenty students gained places at British universities, including three at Oxford and Cambridge. The teaching staff are experienced graduates from English-speaking countries, as well as from the Czech Republic. Classes contain on average 19 pupils in the IGCSE years and 13 in the IB years. The College offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities, including music, art, drama, debating, visits to the theatre and outdoor education. One of the strengths of the College its pastoral care. The pastoral organisation of the College encourages a positive relationship between students and members of staff and between the different nationalities. The building used by The English College was constructed as a school one hundred years ago and was completely refurbished and re-equipped in 1994. |
Resources available include specialist science laboratories, an independent study centre, a wellstocked library, an art centre, a computing centre, a gymnasium for physical education and an all-weather outdoor sports area. A major extension was opened in 2001 providing additional teaching facilities, plus more space for the resources centre, the performing arts and social areas. The College is 12 minutes by metro from the centre of the city. Frequent trams pass close by and there are many bus services in the area. The College is academically selective. Admission is by means of an entrance examination and interview with the Headmaster. A supportive programme is available for any students who continue to need help with English after entry to the College. The English College is strongly supported by the Prince of Wales and former President Havel, joint Patrons of the Foundation. Parliamentary, business and academic support in the United Kingdom comes from the Vice-Presidents and from the wide membership of the Foundation. Supporters include many individuals and companies with interests in the Czech Republic who have a record of supporting education. They have made this initiative possible through donations direct to core activities, capital items or the Bursary Fund. The Headmaster is a member of HMC. |
