The British School of Bucharest is a non profit educational foundation. Founded in 2000 the school now has 150 pupils for the 2004/05 academic year. The school aims to meet the growing demand for a high quality British curriculum.

The school is co-educational and currently admits children from Pre-school to Year 8, this will be expanded to include Year 9 in September 2005. Situated in new villas with a garden and playground in a pleasant residential area of Bucharest the school accepts children of all nationalities. Currently with 34 nationalities in the school 20% are British, 30% Romanian and 60% are from the growing international community in Bucharest.

The curriculum is based on the National Curriculum for England and Wales, but is adapted in those areas where an international perspective is more appropriate. Class sizes are small but in any case are limited to 20.

Pupils in Year 2 and 6 take the UK SATs in May each year. Other year groups take the optional tests where appropriate. English as an additional language (EAL) is offered where necessary. Sports, music and art are features of the regular curriculum but are also extended in the afternoon activities which children are engaged in several times per week.

French, German, Greek and Romanian as an additional language are offered from Year 3 onwards. Swimming, gymnastics and tennis are held in the sports club next to the school.

The school runs from the beginning of September until the end of June and is split into three terms, but pupils are admitted at any time to cater for the needs of expatriate families. The school day begins at 8.30am for all children and ends at 3.00pm.
