The school, located in a modern, purpose-built building, was founded in 1980. It provides an all-day education for pupils aged 2.5 to 15 years, of all nationalities. The school is an international school with pupils from many different nationalities, including about 50% of Portuguese nationality.

The school follows a British (Scottish) curriculum in combination with official Portuguese programmes and is officially recognised by both the Regional Education Authority of Madeira and the British Council. Emphasis is given to all pupils learning English and Portuguese to a bilingual level.

Students benefit from a coherent school programme which encourages them to think for themselves and use their initiative. The school gives a thorough grounding in basic subjects to provide a firm basis for study as the student progresses. The school caters for the individual needs of each student, encourages the intellectual, social and linguistic development of each child and fosters international understanding through working together in a cross-cultural environment.

The school provides a balanced curriculum and a strong emphasis is given to mathematics, English and Portuguese. Other subjects include science, history, geography and the study of the environment. French is taught from the age of 8. The school also encourages pupils to develop their individual talents in art, music, drama and sports.

The school is well-equipped for a 21st century education. The classrooms are large and bright, each having an interactive whiteboard. The school’s Information Centre consists of a well-stocked library and computer room. There is an Activities House where music, art and design, scientific activities and cookery are taught. The British School also has a refectory, auditorium, sports facilities and gymnasium.

The school follows a programme of continuous assessment and a detailed report is written termly on every pupil. Regular meetings are also held with individual parents during the school year as school-home contact is considered of fundamental importance.
