The Berlin British School e.V is a non-profit making association managed by a committee elected by members of the association. It was formed in 1994 as an international school, providing education for children at all school levels, from all over the world. A secure, caring, family atmosphere enables pupils to settle quickly, develop self-esteem and respect for each other. The school strives to enable pupils to achieve the highest standards of education.

The curriculum provides an education based on the ethos and philosophy of the British educational system, while taking due note of the international community that it serves and its geographical location at the heart of Germany. Extra English lessons are provided for children who are acquiring English as a new language. German language teaching is provided for children who are reasonably fluent in English, as well as for native German speakers. Pupils are taught in small groups to ensure rapid attainment of a language level, which enables them to take an active part in the classroom. The main stages of academic development are outlined below:

In the nursery and primary classes the children learn to develop their self-confidence through a variety of practical and structured activities, which encourage early literacy and numeracy skills, while at the same time promote creative development through play, music and art.

For children between 5 and 11 years of age the emphasis is on furthering the development of the children's independence in their approach to their studies. Pupils are divided into small groups. Each individual is encouraged to work to his or her full potential. Pupils also benefit from specialist teaching in one or more subject areas.

Pupils between 11 and 13 years continue to follow the British style of education through years 7, 8 and 9. Specialist teaching provides the opportunity for the children to perform at the peak of their abilities. The staff is dedicated to creating a positive, motivating and supportive learning environment.

Up to the age of 16 years pupils are prepared for IGCSE examinations. Thereafter, senior students (up to 18 years of age) undertake studies to prepare them for graduation with an IB diploma.

A wide variety of extra-curricular activities, (currently in excess of 40), take place during lunch-time and immediately after school. The school PHSE programme and its pupils benefit from the services of a full-time counsellor. The school encourages an understanding of, and respect for, different cultures, nationalities, customs, religions and an awareness of world citizenship.
